My miniature poodle/Bichon mix has been treated with prednisone

Customer Question

My miniature poodle/Bichon mix has been treated with prednisone foe a low blood platelet count-7,000 when first discovered. My vet and I want to wean her off the pred, but every time the dose is reduced her count dips down again. Now because of the pred, she has a low white blood cell count and an elevayed red blood cell count. so we're reducing the dose. Are there herbal or holistic things I can give her to support her blood platelet count as she gets weaned off the prednisone?

Hello. Thanks for the question. With these auto-immune conditions, I like to keep them on Pred for ~ 2-3 months before I start to wean it. I wean slowly over another 2-3 month period. Once I start to wean, if the counts drop I'll add another immuno-suppressant drug to help prevent dropping. I typically go with Imuran (Azathioprine). The other options are Atopica (Cyclosporine) or Mycophenolate. If you want to go with something more holistic, you could use Melatonin. There is some evidence that Melatonin has some efficacy in stabilizing these auto-immune blood diseases. I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.
