Customer Question

My dog has severe diarrhea & just now when she did her business, her back legs seemed to give out on her. How likely is this ongoing diarrhea & this episode with lack of control of her back legs indicative of a spinal issue?

Hello, my name is***** and I have over 20 years of experience as a veterinarian. I am very sorry to hear that your girl Lexi has severe diarrhea and tonight had an episode where her legs gave out on her.Dogs with spinal cord disease may have rear leg weakness and become incontinent, but their stools would still be normal consistency. Spinal cord disease itself does not cause diarrhea. However long term diarrhea can lead to muscle weakness due to changes in blood electrolyte balances and low blood protein and blood glucose levels as well as dehydration. So in short odds are very, very slim that her primary problem is spinal cord disease, but rather her weakness is highly likely secondary to the effects of her diarrhea or the disease process that caused her diarrhea (Addison's disease, protein losing enteropathy, infiltrative intestinal cancer, or severe bacterial enteritis such as a salmonella infection).I hope this information helps.
