Customer Question

I have a ten year old Samoyed on thyroid meds that has a worsening coughing problem. Are there any ideas beside the humidifier we now run for her ? Rich in Wis.

Rich, any age dog can contract a simple respiratory infection resulting in coughing such as infectious tracheobronchitis ("kennel cough"). Ten year olds might do so as well but I also have to consider at that advanced age that your Samoyed has developed cardiopulmonary disorders not often seen in much younger dogs - heart failure due to heartworm disease, cardiomyopathy (heart muscle disease), or myxomatous valve disease ("leaky heart valves"), chronic sterile bronchitis (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease/COPD), and neoplasia (cancer) in the chest cavity. X-rays of her heart and lungs are essential particularly if she's been coughing for more than a couple of weeks. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
