Brownie is apparently suffering an urticarial reaction called angioedema. This is a hypersensitivity reaction to a vaccine, drug, chemical, food, envenomation, and even environmental allergen or variable. This is not the dangerous anaphylaxis in which blood pressure plummets and my patient collapses; instead, it's a delayed reaction that should abate unaided within 36 hours. It can be hastened by administering an over the counter antihistamine such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl) at a dose of 1-2 mg/lb and repeated in 12 hours if necessary. If you happen to have prednisone at home, it will be even more effective at a dose of 0.5 mg/lb once.

Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
