My labradoodle who weighs about 45 pounds ate a tasty cake

Customer Question

My labradoodle who weighs about 45 pounds ate a tasty cake -its a 3 oz size on its own. Cocoa powder was on the list of ingredients after about 7-10 other ingredients first. Can this small of an amount be deadly. we went through this once before when he was a pup and ate a pan of brownie.. it was traumatic and very expensive we would like to avoid that if we can. what do you thin?

The theobromine in cocoa powder becomes toxic at approximately 1/16 of an ounce/lb of body weight or ~3 ounces of cocoa powder for your labradoodle. Because the entire cake only weighed 3 ounces, the most I'd expect is transient gastrointestinal distress - inappetence, vomiting and/or diarrhea - from ingesting such an unusual food. He wasn't intoxicated. There's no reason to induce emesis or treat in any manner. I might have a word with him, however.
