Customer Question

We have a miniature dachshund; I have a grapefruit every night, and for a while, I would let him have a little piece...he does like his grapefruit! But I backed off thinking it might not be that good for him. Since I quit giving him the grapefruit, he has started eating grass for his digestion.
A two part question: will a little grapefruit hurt? and does the grapefruit act as a laxative for him? ***@******.***

Hi, this is Dr. Gabby.

Yes, it is fine to give him grapefruit.

Usually when they eat grass it is because they are nauseous. Or they need fiber.

I do not think a little piece of grapefruit has enough fiber to help his digestion.

So eating the grass may be another issue.

As long as he is still eating well and not vomiting then it is fine for him to eat grass.

So the grapefruit does not have a laxative effect.

Does that help? Do you have any additional questions?
