my dog weighs 18 lbs can i give him coated baby aspirin for his pain? how long does it take before he heals if its just bruised of simple sprain? what should i look for signs to know that its nothing serious? his gums are pink everything he does is normal, breathing, eating walking and drinking except he whine whenever i touch him on his hurting side or try to carry him

To answer you probably isn't something more serious because he's otherwise well. Remember, bruising takes some time to develop and then quite some time to resolve. Aspirin is safe at 10 mg/lb with food twice daily. Ibuprofen and naproxen are toxic to dogs and should be avoided. Injury is probably the most difficult problem for an online vet to assess. If you didn't see resolution of his discomfort within a week of his falling, it would be best if Sammy's vet took a look at Sammy up close and personal. X-rays might be suggested.

Watch for blood from any orifice (unlikely 4 days post-injury) or a respiratory rate exceeding 40 breaths/minute at rest which might indicate respiratory compromise. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.

how come some vets won't recommend aspirin? is that the safest otc pain med that i can give sammy?
Expert:  Dr. Michael Salkin replied 1 year ago.

I can only conjecture that those vets don't know any better. Only aspirin as dosed above or acetaminophen dosed at 7 mg/lb thrice daily are safe. Nothing else OTC. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.

I'm just following up on our conversation about Sammy. How is everything going?
