Customer Question
My dog has yeast issues...
My dog has yeast issues. He licks his paws and chews himself and inches constantly. He has been on cephalexin and cefpodoxime and those have helped greatly (all issues resolved while on them) What can I give him daily so we don't have to keep going to the vet.

Hi there,

I'm Dr. Karing and I would be glad to help with your question about Dutch. It sounds like he is allergic to something. If his feet are the most affected area, then I would consider inhalent allergies to pollens, molds, etc. as the most likely cause of the problem. Westie's are very prone to allergic skin issues. There are actually several at home treatments that can potentially help a lot with allergic skin disease in dogs.

I would suggest an oral antihistamine to control the itch since chewing at the feet contributes to the development of infection. You can use cetirizine (i.e. generic for Zyrtec WITHOUT pseudoephedrine) at 10mg once or twice daily if needed assuming Dutch is greater than 15 pounds.

http://www.amazon.com/GoodSense-Allergy-Cetirizine-Tablets-Count/dp/B00G9E1GYA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1453483316&sr=8-1&keywords=cetirizine

I would also suggest an omega fatty acid supplement (i.e. OFA) such as Nordic Naturals Omega Pet which is a natural antiinflammatory.

http://www.amazon.com/Nordic-Naturals-Pet-Omega-3-Promotes-Wellness/dp/B002CQU596/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1453483379&sr=8-2&keywords=nordic+natural+omega+pet

The antihistamine and OFA have a synergistic action to help reduce inflammation associated with allergies.

To help avoid infection, I would suggest daily use of TrizChlor spray to the affected areas (i.e. feet, etc.)

http://www.amazon.com/TrizCHLOR-Spray-Chlorhexidine-%25-oz/dp/B0035176N0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1453483421&sr=8-1&keywords=trizchlor+spray

and regular baths (once or twice a week) with a medicated shampoo such as Phytovet CK.

http://www.amazon.com/PhytoVet-CK-Antiseptic-Shampoo-oz/dp/B00552LLO2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1453483455&sr=8-1&keywords=phytovet+CK

Please note that the shampoo should have at least 10 minutes contact time with the skin before rinsing in order to be effective: of course, avoid contact with the eyes.

In addition, if there are ever ANY fleas in the area that you reside in, it is imperative that you use a monthly topical or oral flea control product that kills adult fleas. This is because dogs with allergies are very sensitive to fleas and their itch level skyrockets with exposure to just one of those little pests. Consider Bravecto or Comfortis for the best results.

I hope that the information I provided has been helpful. Please remember to select REPLY TO EXPERT if you have more questions or would like additional information. It is my goal to provide you with the most complete information possible prior to you leaving a feedback rating. If you received all the information you needed, then kindly submit a rating.

Sincerely,

Dr. Karing

The vet has said it is an issue with yeast. Is there a way to control yeast besides baths?
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Karing, Veterinarian replied 2 years ago

The Trizchlor spray will help prevent and kill yeast provided the problem isn't too severe. Keep in mind that controlling the itch with the antihistamine and OFA supplement is also going to help prevent yeast which proliferate because the skin is inflammed from the allergy itself as well as the licking/chewing Dutch is doing.

Baths and oral prescription antifungals are other options when the problem persists.
