My dog vomited 3 times today. I've taken water and food

Customer Question

My dog vomited 3 times today. I've taken water and food away for tonight. He will lay down and in a minute or two get up and go to another spot. He continues to do this. Do you know why he might be doing this?

Aldo appears to be painful although his vomiting has stopped. It's reasonable to assume that his gastrointestinal tract is cramping. His behavior is his attempt to "escape" the discomfort. You can see if an over the counter antacid such as famotidine dosed at 0.25 mg/lb affords Aldo some comfort. His water should be left down unless drinking induces more vomiting at which time ice cubes for him to lick can replace his water.

Which breed is Aldo, please? I need to be concerned about bloat in deep-chested dogs.

He's a 13 year old Golden Retreiver.

I'm in upstate NY and its 1:30 am. We're in a very rural area. I have Tums and an Italian style Alka Seltzer called Brioschi. Would any of this help him? I'm thinking probably not.

Thank you. Does Aldo's abdomen appear distended to you?

My "watchful waiting" period is no longer than 24 hours for elderly pets. If you don't see a positive change by morning, please have him attended to by an on-call vet.

Tums is OK at an adult dose. I'm not familiar with Brioschi but it's unlikely that Aldo would tolerate a seltzer.
