My dog was treated at this vet this morning in both ears.

Customer Question

My dog was treated at this vet this morning for yeast in both ears. That was around 11am and around 2:30pm I noticed large lumps under his skin on his chest. They have no spread to mostly his entire body, a couple of them are even around his eye almost causing his eye to be swollen shut. We have him Benadryl about 5 hours ago. He slept for a while then woke up for about 30-40 minutes. He was acting strange but I don't know if it's because something is wrong or if he is loopy from the Benadryl.

Hello, Haley, and thanks for writing in.

I'm sorry that this is going on with Farley.

About how much does Farley weigh?

Expert:  David Janssen replied 1 year ago.

And just so I understand completely...does he still have the lumps and swelling right now?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
He weighs about 35 pounds and we gave him 1 25mg tablet of Benadryl.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
That is correct, he does.

Thanks for that information.

I would go ahead and give another dose of Benadryl at this time.

For his size, he can take 50 mg (2 - 25 mg capsules). So, I would give that amount right away, and you can repeat that every 8 hours if he still has any lumps or swelling remaining.

If you do this, and the lumps or swelling continue, it would be best if he was examined and treated by a veterinarian tonight (ER clinic, or on-call veterinarian), as Farley may need additional treatment (i.e. cortisone injection) to get the allergic reaction stopped.

The Benadryl can cause drowsiness, and some dogs can act a bit "out of it" while on the Benadryl, so I would keep him in a small area where you can keep an eye on him.

Thank you, ***** ***** treat with another round of Benadryl and go from there.

Since we don't know for sure what he is reacting to, I would not give any further medication for his ears, until you are able to talk with Farley's veterinarian, just to play it safe.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if I can assist you and Farley further.
