My little dog sounded congested. Coughs like she's trying to

Customer Question

My little dog sounded congested. Coughs like she's trying to clear something out. Not really coughing. She's 15 yrs old, small (20 lbs) Llaso Apso. Eating well and drinking. Seems to feel fine.

At 15 years of age even a minor cough can indicate advanced cardiopulmonary disease - congestive heart failure or sterile chronic bronchitis, e.g. I need you to assess her respiratory rate at rest. for me. She should be taking less than 40 breaths/minute. I need you to look at her gums and tongue. They should be nicely pink - not whitish (anemia) or bluish/greyish (hypoxia/lack of oxygen to her tissues). Please let me know what you find.

Thank you. I'll take her to our vet tomorrow and have her checked out.

That's good to hear. I don't hear of urgency and so a vet visit tomorrow should be appropriate. I can't set a follow-up in this venue and so would appreciate your returning to our conversation with an update - even after rating - at a time of your choosing. You're quite welcome. Watch her respiratory rate!
