I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner and I regret that my state board of veterinary examiners doesn't allow my speaking with customers by phone in this venue. Please stay in this conversation if you wish.

While dogs don't contract viral colds as we do, they do suffer from respiratory infections often caused by the bacterium Bordetella bronchiseptica and the virus parainfluenza. The infectious agents are the principle agents found in infectious tracheobronchitis ("kennel cough") which may be what your pitbull has contracted particularly if she has associated with other dogs 3-10 days ago - the incubation period for infectious tracheobronchitis. Most of these dogs remiss unaided within 10-14 days. Aspirin is reasonable at a dose of 10 mg/lb with food twice daily. Over the counter cough suppressants should be avoided due their alcohol content and lack of efficacy. A tablespoon of honey every few hours may help sooth her throat and reduce coughing.
