I am sorry to hear about this concern.

Coughing, whether productive or not, can be caused by upper respiratory infections, bronchitis, heart disease, heartworm disease, collapsing trachea, cancer, to name a few differentials.

So, considering it is a bad cough and also productive, it should be evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Do not try to give any type of over-the-counter cough suppressant which can falsely make you think a cough is better.
