My 30 lb cocker spaniel mix dog ate about 2/3 of a 10.8 oz

Customer Question

My 30 lb cocker spaniel mix dog ate about 2/3 of a 10.8 oz package of dark chocolate m&ms about 10 hours ago. The ingredients list the chocolate content as "semisweet". She has been drinking more water than usual, but generally seems okay, although she had a spell of lethargy, fast breathing and elevated heart rate a little while ago. Now she seems okay again. The vet office is closed and the closest emergency clinic is 25 miles away. Should we just observe her closely at home, or take her to the clinic?

Hello & welcome, I am Dr. B, a licensed veterinarian and I would like to help you with your wee one today.

Has she had any tremors or GI signs?

Are her gums pink or pale/white?
Can you take a breathing rate for me (just count her breaths for 10 seconds +multiply that by 6)?

As well, can you take a heart rate (same way but obviously while feeling the heart beat)?
