Customer Question

My 13? Year old girl is starting to leak and is now lethargic

I am sorry to hear you are worried about Bailey. My name is Rebecca. I am a veterinarian and will do my best to help.

Is your girl eating, and drinking? Any vomiting?

Is she spayed?

Is she leaking urine from her bladder? Or is she leaking diarrhea from her anus? Or is the leakage from her vulva, like she has an infection in her vagina or uterus? What does the leakage look like?

This is an Info Request. Since I can't see and examine her, the more information I have, the more I can help you. Rebecca

eating small amounts, no vomiting or diarrhea.
leaking urine, smells rather bad.....
Expert:  Rebecca replied 1 year ago.

Thanks for the additional information.

If she is leaking urine, and it smells bad, it may be a bladder infection or UTI (urinary tract infection). If that is what is gong on, she may need antibiotics.

Is she spayed? Another concern if she is not, is a serious infection of the uterus, called a pyometra. If she is spayed, that is not a concern.

If she were my own dog, I would do a urinalysis and if there are bacteria and white blood cells in the urine, I would start antibiotics. You can only get antibiotics from a veterinarian who has seen and examined her, so you might start by taking a urine sample to your veterinarian.

If she is not eating well, I am concerned she may be sick or possibly a bladder infection is turning into a kidney infection. Keep her eating. Encourage her to drink as much as possible by offering broth as well as water, or by adding water to her dog food. Drinking a lot may help flush out her bladder.

Cranberry and D Mannose are supplements that can be helpful with a bladder infection, but by themselves will not cure an infection.

If she is not spayed, I would get her to a veterinarian as soon as possible.

Let me know how she is doing and what else I can answer or help with.

she is spayed
gave her some Amoxicillin...will see how she responds
Expert:  Rebecca replied 1 year ago.

How much Amoxicillin? How much does she weigh?

Expert:  Rebecca replied 1 year ago.

I am very glad to hear she is spayed.

Expert:  Rebecca replied 1 year ago.

If you tell me her weight, I can give you the right dose of Amoxicillin. Too much might give her diarrhea, too little will not help her.

i have a dozen or so 500mg
Expert:  Rebecca replied 1 year ago.

She would take 1000 mg twice daily for a minimum of 7 to 10 days to treat a bladder infection
