Customer Question

Our precious maltese, Romeo & Juliet, are now 14. He maintains his weight, they both seem fine, but she is losing an outrageous amount of weight. They have both had over 25 teeth extracted. Their food is a small, hard dry dog food (Rachel Ray's "Delicious") which they have had for years. Is it possible we should switch her to a canned, softer food? She seems starving all the time, but her little bones are sticking out all over. Thank you for your help

I'm sorry to hear of this with Julie. A "starving" 14 year old who is melting away is likely to be a diabetic 14 year old. Hyperthyroidism is another concern but found far less commonly than diabetes in our dogs. Diabetes will also cause increased thirst (polydipsia) and volume of urine (polyuria). Have you seen those symptoms as well?
