Customer Question

I have a Husky about 2yrs old..a rescue. He comes from a lot trauma in his early puppy life. I've had his almost a year. His breath smells like metal. The last time his breath smelled this way he had a very large ranula. He has had surgery to remove the glands that had caused it.

One more thing to add. His rankle had caused a very large cyst in the back of his throat that was removed as well. He had gagging problems when he drank. After the surgery it had solved that problem about 85%. What I notice now is that his gagging has increased a little

The concurrence of his gagging and metallic odor identifies acid reflux (gastroesophageal reflux, heartburn) as the most likely cause of that odor. I would see how an over the counter antacid such as famotidine (Pepcid) dosed at 0.25 mg/lb twice daily or omeprazole (Prilosec) dosed at 20 mg daily affects him. Dental problems and drugs round out the other more common causes of that odor but I don't believe that there would be significant dental pathology at his age. Is he currently be ing administered any drugs or supplements?
