Customer Question

Hello Dr Kara, my mischievous labradoodle just ate some blue gel from the heat pack. Not sure how much exactly but it's not a huge amount. I caught him about 5-10 minutes after the act. He seems ok, no vomitting so far and drank water twice. Do I need to take him to the vet? Thanks for your help.

Hello, I'm Dr. Deb.

The expert you requested isn't currently online but given the nature of your question, I can help if you'd like.

Some of the gel packs contain iron which if ingested in large quantities might cause some issues but if only a small amount was eaten, then this shouldn't be a concern.

I wouldn't expect any significant toxicity for your dog although diarrhea might develop in 12-24 hours. A bland diet of boiled chicken and rice should resolve the problem within a day or so.

I hope this helps to reassure you that your dog should be fine. Deb
