Only the procaine penicillin portion of DuraPen is active in dogs and that's dosed at 10,000 IU/lb and repeated at 12 hour intervals. Please note, however, that antibiotics aren't required in most cases. If wound infection does occur, an antibiotic with a broader spectrum than penicillin such as potentiated amoxicillin is a better choice. All animals that are bitten by a snake regardless of their apparent hemodynamic stability should be hospitalized for a minimum of 8 hours to assess for clinical signs that may first maniefest during this period. Both IV fluids to treat hypotension or hypovolemic shock and antivenin administered immediately for viper bites should be considered. Increased survival is seen when the antivenin is given closer to the time of the bite but beneficial effects are noted for at least 60 hours after envenomation. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
