Thank you for your question. My name is***** I have been a small animal veterinarian for 13 years and I'd like to help with your question.

Minocycline (or doxycycline) is often used as part of the protocol for treating heartworm because there is an organism that the heartworms carry called Wolbachia. The minocycline is given for 30 days prior to starting the immidicide. This kills off the wolbachia. Since the wolbachia are protective of the heartworms.which it makes the treatment more successful.
