Hi there!

A cough that develops in an older small breed dog such as a Chihuahua typically means one of the following conditions:

1. Heart disease
2. Chronic bronchitis (kind of like asthma in people)
3. Collapsing trachea (condition in which the windpipe collapses on itself causing a cough)

Less commonly:

1. Heartworm disease
2. Inhalation of foreign material
3. Lung cancer
4. Pneumonia
5. Upper respiratory infection

Unfortunately, there is no home remedy; I would not use butter or petroleum jelly as it will do nothing for the cough and may actually cause more harm if she accidentally inhales it into her lungs (that could be deadly). It's not hairballs.

I don't think there is a way to get around taking her to the veterinarian's office. The good news is that a physical exam alone can often tell you what the problem is, even if further testing is not done. Once you have that information, you may be able to make some decisions.

Hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions!
