Ask a Dog Vet and Get Answers to Your Dog Health Questions
Hi, I can help you with your question today.
Giardia can be very difficult to cure. You are correct to be very aware of environmental contamination, but I cannot guarantee that the steps you are taking will prevent reinfection. That being said, you are doing a much better job than most of my clients to prevent environmental contamination!
It's great that she is already being treated with both metronidazole and Panacur at the same time. Our best results generally come with combination therapy. Beyond that, you can add a probiotic to improve her intestinal flora. You can use a veterinary product like Fortiflora or Proviable, or you can use an OTC human product like Culturelle. Break one capsule over her food once daily.
Is she having any soft stool?
Fantastic. It sounds like things are moving in the right direction. Start the probiotic and continue the medications as prescribed. Her stool can be rechecked at any time after the prescriptions are completed. Make sure she is checked with a regular fecal O&P (ova and parasites) by centrifugation. The Giardia SNAP test will remain positive at this time even if the infection is cleared.
