I have a question I own a black lab mix dog and the couple

Customer Question

I have a question I own a black lab mix dog and the couple of months his right nostril as long gray snot hanging from his nose, and also he coughs when he gets excited like running in the back yard or going for walks. I took him local vet and she said she has no idea what causes this. He eats normally and his stool is fine.

This doesn't have to remain a mystery. I suspect that chronic inflammation in Daisuke's sinuses and/or nasal passages has resulting in that discharge which is also falling into the back of his throat and causing the cough. The proper manner in which to proceed is to scope his nasal passages and biopsy abnormal looking tissue as well as X-ray both his upper and lower respiratory tracts. Chronic primary bacterial infections are uncommon in the upper respiratory tract of dogs. Often times I find an immune-mediated rhinosinusitis (plasmacytic/lymphocytic, usually) in a dog such as Daisuke which can be a challenge to manage because antibiotics might address a secondary bacterial infection but not the primary immune-mediated inflammation which is considered idiopathic (unknown cause).

What kind of medication I should I ask for?

I would prefer that diagnostics were performed before you initiated any new therapy but it would be interesting to see how a short course of an immunosuppressive dose of prednisone affects Daisuke. Please discuss the idiopathic plamacytic/lymphocytic rhinosinusitis with Daisuke's vet who may not be familiar with this under-diagnosed disorder. It often responds to such therapy but not reliably.

I'm just following up on our conversation about Daisuke. How is everything going?
