My dog barks all the time. Any little thing he hears outside

Customer Question

My dog barks all the time. Any little thing he hears outside while he is inside can set him off. He weighs 85 pounds. He is a big dog and takes 9 Benadryl a day which the vet prescribed when he was young. He was very active and is now.

Can you tell me, please, why so much Benadry has been prescribed? The recommended dose is 1-2 mg/lb 2-3 times daily but no more than 50 mg should be given at any one time. Doing so risks central nervous stimulation evidenced by excitement and even seizures. Much of the barking you're witnessing might well be due to the Benadryl and not a behavioral problem.
