Hi. Welcome to Just Answer. My name is***** and I've been a veterinarian for 15 years. Taking the heart rate is actually not that hard to do. It can be done feeling the heart beat on the chest or the femoral pulse in the groin area. Using a stethoscope to listen to the hear beat is more accurate. Here is a great link on youtube that shows this.

A normal resting rate for a small dog like here could be 120 to 160 beats per minute. This can fluctuate easily with stimulation though.
