Customer Question

My dog has had allergy like symptoms for almost a year. We have made many trips to the vet. He currently seems to have a constricted air passage in the throat. He also has eye discharge & occasional bleeding nose. He is 11 & they are recommending an MRI. What is your opinion on these symptoms? I can't afford MRI.

I'm sorry to hear of this with your dog. Epistaxis (nose bleed) is highly suggestive of malignancy in either the sinus(es) or nasal passage of an 11 year old. Rather than MRI, I would scope his nose and biopsy suspicious looking tissue. I can't scope the sinuses but X-rays might reveal a sinus full of fluid and/or bony destruction indicative of cancer. Ocular discharge in these cases often indicates invasion of the cancer through the bony orbit of the eye particularly if the discharge is blood stained. If advanced imaging is chosen, the far less expensive CT should suffice. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
