Customer Question

Hi, I have a 14 month old husky/ border collie mix. She's been sleeping a lot, sneezing a lot, red eyes and now today clear discharge from her nose. She was making some noise in her throat last night but hard to explain the sound

The symptoms you've described indicate upper respiratory infection in Cassie. The "throat noise" suggests laryngitis/tracheitis and may be the precursor to a more obvious cough indicative of infectious tracheobronchitis ("kennel cough") contracted 3-10 days ago when Cassie was exposed to other dogs in a kennel, dog park, or groomer, e.g. The most common infectious agents causing her symptoms are the bacterium Bordetella bronchiseptica and the parainfluenza virus. If Cassie continues to eat and drink normally, you can continue to "watchful wait" because these infections are usually self-limiting within 7-21 days. Worsening - particularly a respiratory rate exceeding 40 breaths/minute which might indicate lower respiratory involvement (pneumonia, e.g.) in the infection - should prompt a visit to Cassie's vet.
