Customer Question

We have a female 32 pound labradoodle with an apparent urinary tract infection. She is trying to urinate constantly and urinated in her bed last night, which never happens. It is Sunday and we are about to start a long drive. My wife has 100MG Nitrofurn Mono (generic for Macrobid). Can we give our dog a reduced dose of that? Thank you.

That antibiotic is a good choice for presumptive therapy of a simple uncomplicated UTI. I dose it at 2 mg/lb every 8 hours for 10-14 days. I would dose Maggie at 3/4 of a 100 mg pill every 8 hours for ease of administration. Adverse effects - if any - may include gastrointestinal disturbances (primarily vomiting), peripheral neuropathies (reversible), and hepatopathy (liver disorder). Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.

I'm just following up on our conversation about Maggie. How is everything going?
