My 10-year old dog is wheezing but is breathing with s mouth

Customer Question

My 10-year old dog is wheezing but is breathing with his mouth open. Occasionally, he is "coughing". Does that sound serious?

It can be, yes. While coughing, wheezing, and open-mouth breathing might represent simple infection at any age, more serious cardiopulmonary disorders also need to be considered in a 10 year old. Heart failure, sterile chronic bronchitis (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease/COPD), and even neoplasia (cancer) in the chest are more likely at Mallomar's age. It would be prudent to have Mallomar's vet thoroughly examine Mallomar paying particular attention to auscultating (listening to) his chest. X-rays of his chest are likely to be recommended.

I'm just following up on our conversation about Mallomar. How is everything going?
