Customer Question

I am so frustrated - my poor Cairn terrier continues to suffer from scabs all over her body and itching. She has been to the vet 3 times and been on every medication but nothing is making the scabs heal and go away. She does have allergies but they have never manifested through scabs- how can I find out why she keeps getting them and why they don't heal?

To answer you directly, by biopsying representative skin. Not only should the tissue be biopsied but it should be macerated and a bacterial culture and sensitivity (C & S) performed. There's a good chance that such a patient is suffering from an autoimmune skin disorder such as the pemphigus complex which requires biopsy to confirm. The C & S will tell you if bacteria are present and if so, which antibiotic would be the very best to prescribe. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
