Hello, this is Dr. Jess. I am sorry to hear about Buddy's problem with seizures. How often is he having seizures? There are several different medications that can be used to treat seizures in dogs. We usually start the medication if they are having 1 or more seizures per month or the seizures last a very long time. There are several different medications that can be used to treat the seizures. Some of the medications themselves aren't too expensive but getting them started can cost some money because we like to do bloodwork beforehand to make sure there aren't any liver issues that could be causing seizures, and then with some of the medications we need to monitor the levels in the blood. This article discusses seizures in more detial.
The most common drug used is phenobarbital, you can see more info about it here:http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=522
Whether or not Buddy needs to start on a medication depends on how often and severe his seizures are. If he is having one mild seizure every few months, I probably would not start him on medication. I hope this helps and let me know if you have any other questions!
