Welcome to Justanswer! I am Dr. Altman and happy to assist you both today!

Can you please give me the name of the chocolate ingested or an approximate weight of the square so that I can calculate the level of concern with this ingestion?

In addition, how long ago was this ingestion?

Thank you

Expert:  Dr. Altman replied 1 year ago.

Regardless, I would recommend if your dog ingested this within the last hour then you can induce vomiting with 3% hydrogen peroxide 1 tsp per ten pounds (1 & 1/2 teaspoons for Pixie) then walk around to mix it in the stomach and agitate the lining. If no vomiting within 10-15 minutes it can be repeated once only in hopes of inducing vomiting.

OK let's say this was 1/2 ounce of dark chocolate. The risk is mild:

Symptoms may include:

  • GI Upset
  • Vomiting
  • Shaking

Symptoms of concern that are less likely with this quantity and should be evaluated by a veterinary er include

  • Tremors
  • Seizures
  • Hyperactivity
  • Fast or irregular heart rate
