Customer Question

155 lb Great Dane may have eaten a 10 mg methadone. We are not sure. If so, it was 45+ minutes ago. What is the lethal dose for dogs?

Hello. Thanks for the question.

Methadone is a very safe medication in dogs, as are many opiates. They don't have the respiratory depression that we see in dogs. In a dog this size, you could go up to 70 mg at a time as a normal dose. The dose range goes up to 0.5 mg per lb body weight.

You may see some sedation and potentially some GI upset. That is all I would expect with this ingestion. You don't need to do anything, other than let him metabolize it on his own.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.

He's a 2.5 year old healthy male. He shows no signs of lethargy or reduced breathing. Not able to find out if pill was left out or not - just a question that it may have been. Thanks for the info. Greatly appreciated.

Luckily, this is a very safe medication. No worries!

You're welcome.
