My2 1/2 year old rot tie was given metacam because he he had

Customer Question

Hi peter. My2 1/2 year old rot tie was given metacam because he he had a ear infection as was in pain so wouldn't let us put the ear drops in. After two days he started to get very watery poo after 2-3 hours of eating. It's now been 2 1/2 days since we stopped using it but he still has the problem. My wife is very worried after reading the horror stories on the net. Is this common or could this be very serious. Many thanks david

Hello, I am afraid that the expert you have requested is not currently available. Still I am Dr. B, a licensed veterinarian and I would like to help you with your wee one today.

Was there any blood in the loose stool?

Has he had any appetite loss or vomiting?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
It's dark brown not sure if it bloody because there is no bright red blood but it does have mucus in it. Vomited twice but just bile and he does tend to do that now and again when he is hungry

Oh and he is still eating

Thank you,

Can you confirm that it isn't black at all?

Not black no

Good, I am glad that is not the case.

Now we can see GI upset signs in dogs that are sensitive to Metacam, so we'd not be panicked here as long as there is no blood or black feces (a sign of digested blood). Generally speaking, we'd expect his signs to start settling at this stage, but there are some supportive care options we can start with Luis. Your light diet is ideal but further to that if we have vomiting, then we can consider treating with an antacid. There are a number of antacids that are available over the counter and pet friendly. Ones we can use here include Pepcid (More Info/Dose @ or Zantac (More Info/Dose @ Whichever you use, we'd give this 20 minutes before food to allow absorption and of course double check with your vet before use if your wee one has any pre-existing health issues or is on any medications you haven't mentioned.

Otherwise, for the loose stool, we'd be best to start a dog safe anti-diarrheal. In regards ***** ***** options, we can use Kaolin/Kaopectate (More Info/Dose @ This is available from your local pharmacy and can slow diarrhea as well as coat the stomach. Furthermore, Propectalin, FastBalance, or Protexin Pro-Fiber (which is available OTC at vets, pet stores, and even Amazon) would be another option. All will slow diarrhea and the last few have the bonus of providing support to the delicate good bacteria of the GI. And if the Metacam is a red herring, that could help with mild gut upset or brewing bacterial infections.

Overall, as long as we are not seeing those signs of a gut bleed (since stomach ulcers are a rare side effect of the drug), then we'd want to continue your supportive care plus use the above to soothe his upset gut. Of course, if he doesn't settle in the next 24-48 hours, then we'd have to consider other non-related issues (ie bacteria, viruses, etc) and consider touching base with his vet about this.

I hope this information is helpful.

If you need any additional information, do not hesitate to ask!

All the best,

Dr. B.
