We have hound pups 4 months old they have had bloody/mucus

Customer Question

We have hound pups 4 months old they have had bloody/mucus feces for a while now. Tried bland diet, changed food, wormed Aug 2 with Safeguard. They are eating and drinking. Don't know what else to do.

Hello, I am sorry to hear you are worried about your puppies. I am a veterinarian and will do my best to help. If these were my own puppies, I would have a stool sample tested for parasites. Your Safeguard will get worms, but will not treat for nonworm parasites like Coccidia and Giardia. Both of these can cause diarrhea with blood and mucus.

You can try bland diet, and probiotics which may help, but if they have Giardia you may need to treat with metronidazole, a prescription medication you can only get from a veterinarian that has seen and examined them. We treat Coccidia with Albon, sulfadimethoxine.
