Customer Question

Is there a safe decongestant I can give my 19 pound pug? Have given him diphenhydramine with little results. He is also on oral doxicycline.

Hi I'm dr. Putter a licensed veterinarian. Yes there are other decongestants that are safe, the most effective and safe alternative to diphenhydramine is Zyrtec 10 milligrams one by mouth once a day is the appropriate dose for a 19 pound dog. It will not interfere with doxycyclin. Please avoid nasal decongestants like Afrin are Nasonex, these can cause tachycardia also known as an increased heart rate. Also please avoid using Zyrtec d, as the D is a decongestant that is not safe for dogs. Please respond below if you have more questions or accept if you are satisfied with this answer.
