Customer Question

I have a 7 year old male red nosed pitbull. I noticed he has been gagging alot, rubbing his back against the wall trying to itch above his tail, and lately has been dragging his butt across the floor. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I live in Northern California. I cant really afford a vet right now.

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. Chaos's pruritis (itchiness) of his back and anus suggests allergic dermatitis; in particular, atopy (allergies to environmental allergens such as pollens, molds, dust, and dust mites, etc.) or, less commonly, food intolerance. His gagging might represent a post-nasal drip common with atopy but I admit I can't know if his gagging is unrelated to his apparent allergy. A short course of a corticosteroid such as prednisone is usually quite effective for atopic dogs. While unreliable, antihistamines such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl) dosed at 1-2 mg/lb (maximum dose of 50 mg at any one time) might be of value particularly in light of your financial constraints at this time. Be sure to be diligent about flea control. This is a time of year when fleas are particularly troublesome in Northern California.
