Out teacup yorkie has been quiet, shy and wouldn't eat- all

Customer Question

Hi! Out teacup yorkie has been quiet, shy and wouldn't eat- all unusual for her. She finally ate with me hand- feeding her. She's walking gingerly, but doesn't appear in pain when I feel her legs/paws. She pooped this morning, and is urinating. She's just not herself. Only goes out on a leash so I don't think its a snake bite.... wondering about a spider though?? we do live in a wooded area. Any ideas? She won't play, is trembling and panting.

Hi, I can help you with your question today.

Is she favoring a leg? Is she able to do stairs and jump as usual?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
She's walking slowly and only with a lot of encouragement- otherwise she's stayed in her bed all day. She doesn't seem to favor any one leg. She hates her bath and last night trembled like crazy after her bath and was panting then. She's usually lively and playful after her bath.

OK, it can be difficult to differentiate abdominal pain from musculoskeletal pain, but I'm suspicious that she has spinal pain. This is not uncommon to see in small breed dogs. I recommend having her evaluated by your regular vet tomorrow morning to confirm this. I would start with a physical exam and also test her for tick borne diseases like lyme. For now,

restrict her activity. No jumping on or off furniture, no stairs. She should only go outside (on a harness) for a quick potty break, then right back inside to rest. We can use a small dose of Children's Tylenol liquid for pain until you can get a better medication prescribed from your vet. How much does she weigh?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
3 pounds

Oh she's tiny! First, purchase Childrens Tylenol liquid. The active ingredient should be listed on the back of the package as acetaminophen 160mg/ 5 mL. She can get 0.4ml by mouth every 12 hours for pain. If you don't have an oral dosing syringe at home, the pharmacist should be able to get one for you to make sure you are giving the proper amount.
