My dog has been excessively licking her vulva area recently

Customer Question

My dog has been excessively licking her vulva area recently and I took her to the vet, she said her vulva area had developed small sores from trapped urine, the vet prescribed hexochlor-k wipes but after cleaning her with those the last 2 days it seems to have turned brown and it seems like it hurts her. Not sure if I should discontinue that treatment

Hello. Thanks for the question.

These wipes can help, but sometimes they are irritating to the skin. When they seem to be burning, I'll switch to oral antibiotics and Benadryl to help with the itching. I would also get her an e-collar (lamp shade) to prevent her from licking. I typically use oral Cephalexin to get this cleared up.

If you want to give something now, you can use Benadryl (Diphenhydramine). The dose in dogs is 1-2 mg per lb body weight. You can give it every 6-8 hours, as needed.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.
