I have an 8 yr old -haired chihuahua. He has been quiet all

Customer Question

I have an 8 yr old long-haired chihuahua. He has been quiet all day, but for the last 6 hours or so wants to hide in corners, won't come to you even if you are sitting on the floor near him. When he walks he has his tail between his legs and walks with a slight off balance gait. The only time he perked up at all is when I called "dinner time". He ate like he was pretty hungry, but he's a fast eater anyway. I can't think of anything that could have upset him today. We did have a thunderstorm but he usually doesn't get upset with them. And I did some major clean-out of a closet where I was moving boxes around. We did move about 4 months ago, but he's never showed any anxiety about seeing boxes before. Any thoughts?

Hi there, this is Dr. Elaine
I'd like to ask you a few questions first if I may to better help me advise you.
Can he/is he still willing to use stairs or get up and down on any furniture that he normally would?
Any other pets that he interacts with? If so, are they doing so normally?
Gentle press along his back and move his tail up/down/back and forth--any discomfort?
Does his anal area appear red or swollen (and has he ever had anal gland problems?
Any head shaking or head tilt?
Any abnormal eye movement like nystagmus (eyes moving back and forth side to side)?
Normal BMs and urination?
Thanks
