Hello ,
Welcome to JA , I think Dr.Kara is not available at this moment.
I am DrD ,I am a licensed veterinarian ,I will try to do my best to assist you with your questions today.
Several newer drugs are available and are currently being investigated or used clinically by neurologists for the control of Epileptic Seizures.Levetiracetam is one of them.
The most obvious potential benefits from any new anticonvulsant are either improved seizure control, or reduced unwanted effects (adverse effects). Levetiracetam - no obvious side effects have been documented in either dogs or cats in the scientific literature. From clinical experience most dogs and cats on levetiracetam display no obvious side effects associated with the drug. The tendency in veterinary medicine (both general practice and clinical neurology) has been to use these anticonvulsants only when phenobarbital and KBr therapy have failed or produced excessive side-effects.In people, these drugs are often used as sole anticonvulsant agents. There is nothing but anecdotal information regarding the use of these drugs in such a way in veterinary medicine, but clinical experience supports the use of several of these drugs as sole agents in dogs.I hope this helps. Please come back and post if you have any other questions. Please click accept if you are satisfied with my answer.Thank you.
