Customer Question

Trying to figure out Zyrtec dosage for a 120 lb. Newfoundland
with flea allergy.
Have used Pred but he cannot stop peeing anytime he is on it. He just finished a round and also antibiotics and has now chewed 3 new hot spots in the last 12 hours.

Aloha! You're speaking to Dr. Michael Salkin
Based on a single-blinded (owners), placebo-controlled study, 0.5 mg/lb once daily resulted in satisfactory control of pruritis (itchiness) in 18% of dogs evaluated in the study. Not terribly impressive but consistent with the results in a large study of antihistamines and allergic dermatitis in dogs performed at UC Davis a few years ago.
Anecdotal dosing is 10-20 mg/dog which makes more sense for such a big dog as Tank. I would see how 20 mg of that antihistamine affects him. An anti-pruritic tranquilizer such as Acepromazine should be considered for him. It's available through his vet.
