Customer Question

My mini dachshund of 1 1/2 years sleeps at night with me. I woke and noticed she didn't move. I spent 2 minutes trying to wake her. Her breathing was so shallow I thought she was dead. Finally I blew in her face and she woke up. She is acting perfectly normal today. What is wrong with her?

Aloha! You're speaking to Dr. Michael Salkin
I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. That's certainly a curious history and should prompt careful auscultation (listening to) of her heart by her vet. A cardiac arrhythmia causing syncopy (fainting) should be a primary consideration. A bradyarrhythmia (slow irregular heart rate) accentuated by sleep would be the most common of the arrhythmias resulting in such behavior and could result in episodic signs.
