Customer Question

I have an 8 year old female American Bulldog. She has had 4 Mast Tumors removed during 2 separate surgeries over the past 3 years. We have been asked to give her 2 Benadryl and 1 Pepcid AC each morning and 2 Benadryl each evening. Is this a correct course of action for the rest of her life?

I don't believe so. Antihistamines such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl) can reduce the inflammation associated with degranulation of mast cells and famotidine (Pepcid) can afford some comfort should gastrointestinal inflammation arise secondary to GI mastocytosis but the benefits of treating dogs in such a manner or even with corticosteroids, chemotherapy, or other targeting therapy in an attempt to prevent recurrence remains unproven and may, in fact, mask the appearance of new mast cell tumors thus preventing early attention to them.
