My 13 year old male rat terrier dog has lost his sense of smell,

Customer Question

My 13 year old male rat terrier dog has lost his sense of smell, sight and hearing within a short period of time. He also is overweight but I don't over feed. What might he be suffering from?

Aloha! You're speaking to Dr. Michael Salkin
I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. In order to lose all three of those senses, a global encephalopathy would need to exist. This describes a disorder involving all (or most) of his cerebrum because the sense of smell involves the frontal lobe of his cerebrum, vision is governed by the occipital lobe of his cerebrum, and smell is governed by the temporal lobe of the cerebrum - at least in part. At his advanced age, a neoplastic (cancer) disorder would top my differential diagnosis list. Have you seen any additional symptoms referable to his brain - a change in mentation (mental status), tics, tremors, or seizures?
