Customer Question

My 7 year old Pom has bad teeth and at least 1 that is infected. I have been give a cost of around $1000 for the problem--which I can not afford. I am a Senior.
Is there a Human antibiotic that I can get for him as they are less expensive.
Or what other advice do you have for me.

Hello, my name is***** and I have over 20 years of experience as a veterinarian. I am sorry to hear that Palucchi has significant dental disease including at least one infected tooth. While antibiotics may help a little, and I would recommend them a few days before a thorough cleaning so that he has blood levels present before his cleaning to prevent the infection from spreading, they won't help if we don't follow up with a cleaning, and may predispose to developing a resistant infection if they are used indiscriminately. I understand that the estimate is beyond your means. I highly recommend contacting your local humane society or animal shelter to see if they run a low cost, sliding scale clinic for seniors like yourself. If they don't have that capability here are two links that may help you find help to get him healthy: I understand that he may be too sore to let you brush his teeth but in the meantime to decrease the amount of bacteria in his mouth it may help to use an antibacterial mouth wash/rinse. Here's a link to show some examples: of luck with your fellow, please let me know if you have any further questions.

Hi Marilyn,

I'm just following up on our conversation about Palucchi. How is everything going?
