Customer Question

I hope you are serious.... I have a 3 year old Albino Aussie, he is deaf and sight impaired, essentially white, pink skin, small irregular blue eyes pink nose, pink around eyes. he hs had one spontaneous bleed into his left eye, expensive to solve, did not at all tolerate oral steroids( every s/e all at once very sad for a dog let alone a human) I am by the way a Nurse Practitioner. He has had problems with foods so he has been eating I am loving you red meat formula. He obvously is very sensitive to heat and sun and pretty smart about staying out of the sun. He was groomed a couple of weeks ago and now is itchy. Skin is dry flaky on his back. How short can I go with his coat? So thick so hot even though I know his fur protects his skin and I also realize he does not perspire through his skin he is still hot. Live in So. california. I have a special shampoo and will gladly bathe him (what a workout) please advise. Additionaly I feel he is significantly genetically challenged by his Albinism, bad teeth along with his sensitive digestion so I would appreciate your advice as I have been the one getting hte Vet to listen and finallly admit he is challenging. No parasites, takes flea and heart worm meds monthly that also was a challenge as one of the products made him ill.

HI, I can help you with your question today. Is this the first year that he has been itchy?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
This is the worst it has been. No hot spots but I have found some dry scabs, mostly flakes and itching

OK, he's at the age that he can be developing new allergies. Have you tried an antihistamine for him before?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
I mentioned he is taking Zyrtec, 2 once a day as rec. by vet.

oops, I thought I mentioned the Zyrtec..

OK, I do not recommend cutting his hair any further. Instead, it is best to have him thoroughly brushed out to remove dead undercoat. A haircoat that has normal airflow will insulate him against the heat.

In terms of itching and flaking, I recommend starting a fish oil supplement. These are available at pet stores, or you can use a human OTC product.

If the Zyrtec does not seem to be controlling the itch, you can try Claritin (10mg loratadine) or Benadryl (25 mg diphenhydramine) instead. As with humans, sometimes one medication will work better than another for a given individual.
