I have a Golden Retriever named Princes. We shaved her fur

Customer Question

I have a Golden Retriever named Princes. We shaved her fur last June for the summer. Her fur usually grows back by October. She still has not regrown her coat back and we are concerned. She is 12 years old. What can we do. Thanks Steve

Hi, I can help you with your question today.
Unfortunately, this is not uncommon to see. In some geriatric dogs, we never identify the cause of lack of hair regrowth.
However, in some cases we may find hypothyroidism as the underlying problem. I recommend having some senior blood work checked with your regular vet, including the thyroid.
If her thyroid is normal, you can try melatonin for her. This is a regular OTC human supplement. For a large dog like Princes, give 6mg by mouth twice daily. It will be 3-4 months before we know if the melatonin is helping.
Please let me know if you have further questions. I am happy to continue until I provide the service that you seek.
