Welcome! I am Dr. Altman, a licensed veterinarian and happy to answer your questions today.
I am so sorry no one has assisted you yet today.
I have just a few additional questions if you don't mind so I can assist you further:
- When did this grooming appointment occur?
- Have the anti-inflammatory medications and reduced activity improved his comfort at all?
- Was the anal gland material normal when expressed internally or did he cry in pain when expressed?
Any additional information you can provide will help guide my recommendations for Rooster...thank you

Grooming appointment was 6/5. Gland expression done externally at groomers. Took him to first vet appt, 6/6, glands expressed using internal method normally and no whimpering behavior. Steroid treatment w shot and topical to heal nicks on scrotum skin. Still crouching and circle behavior along with head shaking and scratching of ear. Back to vet on 6/12. Again internal gland expression little removed frm right side, rectal exam normal.anti-inflammatories given. Taking that in 1/2 Benadryl. Circling and crouching when walking not improving. Licking at back high thigh and trying to get at back side and under tail near rectum. Rectum color seems normal non irritated. Drinking and eating has to be forced but will do it and keeping it down. Stool and urine seems fine but less frequent.

Poor Rooster, he sounds miserable! I hope the head shaking was addressed? Does he have any type of an ear infection (odor, redness, discharge)?
It sounds like the anal gland sac itself might be irritated and need infusion with a steroid/ antibiotic to help soothe his irritation and pain. I am not sure I can picture the crouching when walking, is his tail down or out?
How much does he weigh and what mg benadryl are you using (25 mg is adult)? How frequent? Did the steroids work better to keep him comfortable initially then the anti inflammatory you were given to administer at home? Unfortunately those injections only last about 24 hours and then if they are severe enough we send home oral as well to maintain comfort and then taper as improvement is seen...
