Just got cut off from Dr Andy about 8 month old lab shaking

Customer Question

just got cut off from Dr Andy about 8 month old lab shaking his head and scratching his left ear. Sounds like a lot of fluid in his ear. Anything I can do to help him, besides vet visit/call on Monday?

Aloha! You're speaking to Dr. Michael Salkin
I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. A safe approach to his ear would entail filling the entire ear with a half vinegar, half-water solution or, instead, a commercial over the counter dog ear cleanser, and then massaging the base of his ear until you saw a column of that fluid moving up and down the ear canal. You then can wipe away any debris that floats to the top of the column of fluid. You can repeat this process until no more debris appears. Your dog will then shake his head thereby removing the fluid. You can then pack the ear (fill the entire ear canal) with an over the counter triple antibiotic ointment such as Neosporin or Polysporin (or generics). That should suffice until his vet can scope that ear on Monday and treat more appropriately.
